Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Norway, defended its European title of 3,000 meters indoors on Sunday to become a double gold medalist during three consecutive editions of the continental championships.
Ingebrigtsen was one of the three best names of the last session at Omnisport Arena in Apedoorn with the height queen of Ukraine Yaroslava Mahuchikh and the home favorite Femke Bol.
Mahuchikh dominated to win a third title, while Bol concluded the procedure by anchoring the Dutch with gold in the women’s 4x400m relay.
The Italian Zainab file managed a 7.01 second in the world to win the female 60m.
Ingebrigtsen was in a record form. The Norwegian, who won the 1500m on Friday, had a time of 7 minutes 48.37 seconds for what was a 16th European senior title in all areas and championships.
Still at just 24 years old, he equaled the record for seven gold medals in the European room held by the Valeriy Borzov Soviet-Ukrainian, which won titles of 50m and 60m in the 1970s when the event took place each year.
“It is a question of presenting yourself and it is a competition,” said Ingebrigsen of his appearance in Apedoorn before a season that goes to the world indoor championships in Nanjing later this month and ends in the outdoor world championships in Tokyo in September.
“I like to compete and I think that’s what it is. I would not be very motivated to jump on the treadmill if it was not for a race to come. It’s like that.”
Ingebrigtsen, a double Olympic champion and double world champion over 5,000 m, was content to sit at the back of the peloton at the start of the 15 laps race.
He quickly took the pace, moving in mind with George Mills British, the Dutch adolescent Niels Laros and Andreas Almgren from Sweden on his shoulder.
The race began to end with five laps to run, before INGEBRIGTEN lets tear with two and a half laps.
Mills stayed with the Norwegian, but the Briton faded in the last 100 meters.
Ingebitsen crossed the line, a finger which raises when it corresponded to the Borzov record, in a time far from the world record of 7: 17.55 which he fixed on the distance outside last year.
Mills took the money in 7: 49.41 m with France Azeddine Habz Depression of Almgren for his second medal of these champions after a money in 1500m.
