A Riedale student celebrated the victory of a national champion title.

Ben Foulger, 16, recently participated in the national championships of the sports championships under 17, triple male jump, managing to jump 14 meters and 26 central meters to win the title of national champion.

The event took place on February 8 and 9 at the EIA in Sheffield, Ben facing eight other competitors who had respected the standards required to enter.

He would continue to win the competition by two central counters.

Ben only started participating in the triple jump in 2022 after performing well in athletics at school, joining City of York Athletics Club in the summer of 2022.

This came after Ben celebrated victories in sporty days and local competitions, progressing to train three evenings a week in sport.

The student of Ryedale is now training in York with Craig Poudder and Bramcote Athletics Club, in Scarborough, with coach Zach Harrop on a new athletics track.

In addition to his success in Long Jump, Ben also participated in Sprint competitions.

He recently won the northern indoor championships in January 2025 in Triple jump and long jump, and last summer won a bronze medal at the Outdoor National Championships for the triple jump of the under 17s.

His incredible achievements have seen Ben win the Scarborough Prize and District Area Sportsman of the year for the last two years.

Speaking about her superb distinction, Ben’s mother, Sarah, commented: “Ben worked hard to reach this level and the feeling of winning the title has not yet flowed!

“Everyone is really proud of their achievements and also excited to follow their trip to athletics.”

The next step for Ben is the next English school championships for summer, as well as the International Athletics Board Bollling and the outdoor national championships.
