Ben Stokes suggested that it could be open to the care of the captain of the Blancball Team of England, according to the managing director Rob Key – who also stressed that the decision must not be precipitated.
Jos Buttler withdrew as a captain of the limited oblies after his disappointing reign ended with a lamentable champions trophy campaign which left his team breastfeeding a series of 10 defeats against 11 games since the turn of the year.
His vice-captain Harry Brook was supposed to be in front of the queue if the next generation was invited to intensify.
However, Key will give himself a lot of time to consider all the options.
Stokes, 33, turned out to be a natural leader and inspiring since his care on the red side of Joe Root.
However, his age and fitness problems – Stokes currently recovering from a second serious problem of the hamstrings in a year and previously a major knee surgery – means that the emphasis has been put on him as a test specialist for almost 18 months.
Reflecting on the path to follow after more than 50 disappointments in the Champions Trophy, Key had suggested that it would be “stupid” not to consider the test skipper, which presented for the last time in an ODI during the 2023 World Cup in India.
Although an official meeting is not planned soon, Key revealed that he had informed Stokes of the idea, which did not receive an initial reversal.
Key had met Stokes in a training camp in Abu Dhabi, where he combined his current rehabilitation with his first steps to an off -scope future in the game.
When asked on BBC Radio 5 live on Monday evening what could be Stokes’ response to an approach, Key said: “I didn’t really talk to him, to be honest. I have (just) somehow said the other day, (after) when I did the round table (interview) with the written journalists, and I said (to stokes) “ oh, by the way, I just said that you are in consideration for the concert of the white ball. ”.
“And he sort of emoji and things like that, as if to say:” OK “- not that I gave him this, but these are the kind of conversations we have.
“Each series we do, we look, we are reviewing, we try to determine how to improve, even when we win.
“You just don’t want to react to us not playing well. You always want to be involved.
Key stressed, however, there were other strong candidates for the white ball captain, including Brook.
“I’m going to think hard enough, with a few other people in the coming weeks and try to determine what we think the best thing is,” said Key.
“I think it’s interesting with Stokes and if the Cricket 50 is for him, but then he is in Abu Dhabi for the moment, getting back in shape, and there is obviously a risk with that.
“So there are a few things to try to decide, but I don’t think it’s really to rush.”
