The English captain Maro Itoje has rejected against the claims of the former skipper Will Carling according to which the team of coaches of Steve Barthwick does not have the experience necessary to pass the national side to the upper level.

Carling recently wondered if England had gathered the “best” coach configuration, suggesting that a lack of high -level experience could limit the potential of the teams.

Addressing BBC Radio 4 Tuesday, the old center said: “You look at the caliber of the coach team in England and you have to ask if it is the best that we can put there.

“Some of them learn, some of them are very young and may not have experience in terms of testing. This is perhaps what we see an impact on players.”

However, Itoje was firmly disagreement with Carling’s Declaration, praising work ethics and the impact of Barthwick and its staff.

“With all the respect due to the will, I do not necessarily agree or accept this characterization of our coach staff,” said Itoje to the Bbc.

“I was incredibly impressed by the way they did their business and trained us. The players work very hard, but the coaches, believe me, they work extremely hard. »»

The style of play of England in the Six Nations faced severe criticisms, even though they bounced after an opening defeat in Ireland with narrow home victories against France and Scotland.

Itoje thinks that a large part of England’s progress is due to coach staff work.

“My experience of them was only positive,” continued the lock. “I think most people can see an improvement in the team, and a large part of this is due to the work that the coaches have done and in the posts in which they put us.

“I think we follow in the right direction.”

Barthwick, in its first role at the head of an international team, brought key personalities from its back room of Leicester Tigers, including Richard Wigglesworth (attack coach), and Kevin Sinfield, who initially directed the defense before moving on to a role-based role.

Defense coach Joe El-Abd divides his time between England and the French club Oyonnax, while Scrum Tom Harrison coach, at 33, is younger than the hooker of England Jamie George.

Carling’s remarks have added to the current debate on the tactical approach of England, but Itoje remains focused on blocking external opinions.

“It is a requirement. We play a public sport, in front of 80,000 at the Allianz stadium and millions at home every time we arrive on an English jersey.

“We want people to be engaged with rugby and have an opinion because if they do not do it, it probably means that they don’t care.

“As players, what we have to do is focus on what we consider important.”
